The formula, exactly
Needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. The 78% student needing 85% with a 30% final requires a 98.3% on the final — a number that converts vague anxiety into a specific, discussable target. The same student targeting 80% needs 83.3% — achievable.
Reading the verdicts
- Negative or zero: the target is locked regardless — study for pride, not panic.
- 0–70: routine — steady review suffices.
- 70–90: serious — target the exam's high-value topics and practice tests.
- Above 100: mathematically impossible — the conversation moves to extra credit, dropped lowest scores, or retake policies. Ask early, not after.
Weight games, honestly played
Some syllabi count the final only if it helps, or replace the lowest exam — read the grading contract before calculating. The formula assumes plain percentage weighting; quirky syllabi need their own arithmetic (the registrar or instructor confirms in one email).
