Spaced Repetition: The 1-3-7 Rule and Why Cramming Loses

The spacing effect is the most replicated finding in learning science: reviews spaced across days beat the same total hours massed together — by large, durable margins. The 1-3-7 rule is its practical form, and it is the schedule engine behind the study calculator.

Why spacing works

Memory strengthens when retrieval is effortful but successful. Review too soon and recall is trivial (no strengthening); too late and recall fails (frustration, relearning). The sweet spot sits at the edge of forgetting — which moves outward as memory strengthens. Hence expanding intervals: 1 day, then 3, then 7, then 14 — each review lands harder and lasts longer.

  3. Interleave topics within review days — discrimination between similar concepts improves.
  4. Sleep after learning — consolidation is a sleep-dependent process; the schedule assumes you sleep.
