How GPA calculator Works
The 4.0 scale, standard convention
A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0. GPA = grade points × credits ÷ total credits — credit hours weight the average, which is why the 4-credit lab course moves your GPA more than the 1-credit seminar.
Standing bands
- 3.7+: excellent — honors territory at most schools.
- 3.3–3.7: strong — competitive for most programs.
- 3.0–3.3: solid — the common graduate-school floor.
- Below 2.0: academic-probation territory at most institutions — the registrar's warnings precede the math.
Using it strategically
GPA math is forward-looking: the grade-needed calculator shows what a final exam changes, and credit-weighting shows where effort pays most — the 4-credit course you are borderline in moves the number 4× faster than the 1-credit elective.
